Edna Jean “Mama” “Nana” Miller, age 85, of Mount Olive, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025, at UAB St. Vincent’s Hospital. She was born on April 10, 1940, at home to Lloyd Daniel and Myrtle Lee Oldham in Fultondale, Alabama.
Jean attended Lewisburg Elementary and Junior High School. Determined and dedicated, she later earned her GED and went on to obtain her associate’s degree in nursing in 1978. She began her nursing career at UAB St. Vincent’s Hospital before joining Cardiovascular Associates, where she became one of their very first ultrasound cardiovascular tech nurses. She served with skill, compassion, and unwavering devotion from 1982 until her retirement in 2005—giving 23 years of heartfelt care to patients and colleagues.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Erskine McCombs, whom she married in 1956 and who passed in 1984; her second husband, Ray Miller, whom she married in 1984 and who passed in 2017; and her brother, “Sonny” Oldham.
Jean is survived by her three children, Michael McCombs (Carolyn), Lisa Chamblee (Dennis), and Daniel McCombs (Kelly); and her stepchildren, Harold Miller (Mary), Teresa Kilpatrick, Mary Miller, and Owen (Caren) Miller.
She was a proud Nana to her grandchildren Cassidy Sanders (Shane), Karley Chamblee (Alex), and Rivers Chamblee (Emily); and to her step-grandchildren Kimberly (Eric) Sanders, Nathanael (Andrea) Miller, Logan Miller, Terry Kirkpatrick, Tommy Kirkpatrick, and Benjamin Kirkpatrick. She was also blessed with a great-granddaughter, Laney Sanders, and step–great-grandchildren Riley and Eliza Sanders.
Jean’s life was filled with love, purpose, and deep faith. Her greatest accomplishments were being a devoted wife and mother and raising a family to know and follow Christ. She lived with a true servant’s heart—tender, accepting, Christ-like, and never judgmental. As a nurse, she cared deeply for every person she met, offering kindness, comfort, and dignity.
Jean never missed an opportunity to thank someone when they did something for her. She was genuinely grateful for every act of kindness, no matter how small, and made sure those around her felt appreciated and valued.
She adored flowers and gardening and had a gift for helping others. Jean had a soft spot for any animal in need, often opening her home and heart to each one. She treasured baking bread, preparing big holiday meals for her beautifully blended family, and sharing desserts made with pecans from her own trees.
She is also survived by her cherished dachshund, Missy, her faithful little companion who brought her comfort and joy for 14 wonderful years.
