Clarence Abney Obituary

Clarence Lee Abney, age 89, of Mount Olive, Alabama, went home peacefully to be with the Lord on October 30, 2025.

He was born on February 16, 1936, in Sayreton, Alabama, to the late George Washington Abney and Vera Hodges Abney.

Clarence retired after over 40 years of dedicated service with U.S. Pipe, Jim Walter Resources, and Sloss Industries. He also proudly served his country in the United States Navy from November 15, 1956, to December 30, 1958, in Jacksonville, Florida.

One of the greatest blessings of Clarence’s life was meeting the love of his life, Faye Vance, on a blind date. From the moment he laid eyes on her, he knew she was the one. The two built a beautiful life together, filled with love, laughter, and faith.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Faye Vance Abney; his brothers George Merle Abney and Vernie Kenneth Abney; and his sisters Alyce Abney Dray, LaVera (Bittie) Abney Reed, Helen Abney Fromhold, and Ruth Abney Holley.

Clarence is survived by one son, Steven Lee Abney (Debby); two daughters, Donna Abney and Suzanne Abney Fields (Mark); five grandchildren, Candice Michelle Lippeatt, Joshua Steven Abney (Leah), Jonah Thomas Abney (Denise), Sarah Lippeatt Watson (Tyler), and Rachel Fields Wainman (Logan); and great-grandchildren Addison, Lowen, Olivia, Cayson, Hudson, Haven, and another precious great-grandchild on the way.

Clarence was an active and loyal member of Cornerstone Church of Mount Olive, where he was known for singing his signature song, “The Old Ship of Zion.”

He loved to hunt, fish, and spend time in the mountains—especially in Cades Cove, where he could be found hiking trails, enjoying picnics, and soaking in the beauty of God’s creation.

Clarence had a wonderful sense of humor, always ready with a joke to make someone smile. He loved his family deeply and had a special fondness for his animals, especially Mason.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

“Together again with his beloved Faye.”
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
